# Roles

Roles offer the chance to *buff* (add extra [speed](/the-ocean-racing-league/ocean-racing-league/racers/speed.md) to a racer as *shown in the 'Roles (Buffs)' Visual below)*. Or to *debuff* *(take away speed as shown in the Roles - (Debuffs) visual below)*\

Your captain will represent your team in [playoffs and finals](/the-ocean-racing-league/ocean-racing-league/racing/race-types.md) by default, so don't forget to register a good one for free!

Multiple roles can not be stacked on the same racer but the buff a role offers will stack on top of [coach buffs](/the-ocean-racing-league/ocean-racing-league/coach-buffs.md) and other [performance factors](/the-ocean-racing-league/ocean-racing-league/racers.md).
